After Sir Francis Bernard Dicksee (English, 1853–1928). Oil on canvas painting. After the 1881 artwork titled "The Symbol. 'Is it nothing to you, all ye that pass by?' Lamentations 1:12". Signed "Justus Hill" and dated 1870 lower left. Framed. Sir Francis Bernard Dicksee was an English Victorian painter and illustrator, best known for his pictures of dramatic literary, historical, and legendary scenes. He was the President of the Royal Academy of Arts from 1924 to 1928. "The Symbol" was one of the most celebrated paintings of his early career and a landmark of late Victorian art. Exhibited at the Royal Academy in the same year Dicksee was elected Associate Royal Academician at just twenty-seven, the painting was an immediate success, widely reproduced, and praised for its colour, power, and imaginative depth. The artwork depicts a medieval Italian scene in which a joyful procession is subtly disrupted by a moral warning: a relic-seller offering a crucifix and skull confronts a young lover distracted by pleasure, while a biblical subtitle from Lamentations underscores the theme. The painting balances beauty and festivity with moral seriousness, aligning it with traditional allegories of Virtue versus Vice. Justus Hill (1848–1925) was a British artist, protege of George Cruickshank and student of Frank Reynolds.
