Lot 0232: AFTER GIAMBOLOGNA GRAND TOUR BRONZE SCULPTURE OF HERMES

Seller: F9368 (28)

After Giambologna, or Giovanni di Bologna (Italian, 1529–1608). Cast and black-patinated bronze sculpture. Early Grand Tour era, early 18th century. The piece represents the Ancient god Hermes, or Mercury, the divine messenger and patron of trade, profit, and commerce. Signed on the bottom, J. de Bgne. Mounted on a Siena marble bas-relief stand. Giambologna is one of the most distinguished sculptors in the history of art. A master of the Italian Mannerist style, he occupies a pivotal position in the timeline of Italian sculpture, providing the link between the periods of the High Renaissance and the Baroque. Grand Tour was the 17th to early 19th-century custom of a traditional trip through Europe, with Italy as a key destination, undertaken by upper-class young European men. Keywords: Sculpture, Figurines, Neoclassical Decor, Bronzeware.
