The piece represents the Ancient god Hermes, or Mercury, the divine messenger and patron of trade, profit, and commerce. Signed on the bottom, J. de Bgne. Mounted on a Siena marble bas-relief stand. Giambologna is one of the most distinguished sculptors in the history of art. A master of the Italian Mannerist style, he occupies a pivotal position in the timeline of Italian sculpture, providing the link between the periods of the High Renaissance and the Baroque. Grand Tour was the 17th to early 19th-century custom of a traditional trip through Europe, with Italy as a key destination, undertaken by upper-class young European men.
