Executed in traditional mixed media egg tempera on a gesso and levkas ground on a wooden panel, with a gilt background and a finely chased gilt metal frame. The composition illustrates the medieval legend of the Seven Sleepers, youths who took refuge in a cave outside Ephesus to escape persecution for their Christian faith, a narrative revered in both Orthodox Christian and Islamic traditions.
