An antique Russian Orthodox hand painted icon depicting Christ Pantocrator, executed in the traditional iconographic manner. Christ is shown holding the New Testament in His left hand while His right hand is raised in a gesture of teaching and blessing. The halo bears the obligatory Greek Christogram, including the abbreviation identifying Jesus Christ. The icon is painted in mixed media using egg tempera on a gesso and levkas ground, on a wooden panel with a gilt background. Stylistically attributable to a Central to Southern Russian school, the work dates to the first half of the 19th century. Provenance: The Icon Gallery, Franconia. The icon is accompanied by an expert report by Richard H. Mayer affixed to the reverse. A fine example of 19th century Russian Orthodox devotional art. Icon Paintings, Religious Items, Christian Art, Collectibles.
