An antique Russian Orthodox icon depicting the Old Testament prophet Elijah, known in Orthodox tradition as Ilyas or Ilya. Executed in traditional mixed media egg tempera on a gesso and levkas ground on a wooden panel with a recessed kovcheg. The icon follows the established iconography of The Fiery Ascent of Elijah the Prophet, portraying the prophet amid surrounding saints and narrative scenes from his life. The title is inscribed in Church Slavonic in the upper central field. Dating from the late 18th to early 19th century, this work represents a fine example of Russian religious art and antique devotional iconography. Russian Religious Items and Antique Collectibles.
