An antique Russian Orthodox icon dating from the late 18th to 19th century, depicting the Virgin Mary with the Christ Child according to the revered Korsun Mother of God iconography. Executed in traditional mixed media egg tempera on a gesso and levkas ground on a wooden panel with a recessed kovcheg and a gilt background. The title is inscribed in Church Slavonic along the lower border. Flanking the central image are full length depictions of Saint John the Baptist and Saint Catherine. According to tradition, the original Korsun icon of the Mother of God was brought from Korsun modern day Khersones in Crimea by Prince Vladimir in 988, coinciding with the Christianization of Rus.
