Lot 0240: JAPANESE SHOWA PERIOD BRONZE STATUE OF NINOMIYA SONTOKU

Seller: 1E368 (47)

This Japanese bronze statue depicts the agricultural reformer and moral philosopher Ninomiya Sontoku (also known as Ninomiya Kinjirō) as a young boy, a pervasive icon of diligence and filial piety in Japanese culture. The figure is shown walking while reading a book and carrying a bundle of firewood on his back, symbolizing his dedication to self-education despite childhood poverty. The base features a cast inscription dated "Imperial Year 2598" (Kōki 2598), which corresponds to 1938 (Showa 13), placing this casting in the pre-war era when such statues were widely installed in schools to promote moral virtues. Ninomiya Kinjiro, Showa Period, 1938, Asian Art, Scholar, Firewood, Diligence, Educational History, Japanese Bronze, Imperial Japan, Moral Instruction.
