Ferdinand Levillain (French, 1837–1905) for Ferdinand Barbedienne (French, 1810–1892). Patinated bronze centerpiece in Neo-Greek style. Napoleon III period, ca. 1850. Large footed plate with side handles. Relief medallion in the center of the plate depicts two Greek men under grapevines, one playing the flute. Titled "Menaclas Mopsvs" and signed "F. Levillain" underneath. The handles are garnished with sculpted grape bunches. Signed "F. Barbedienne" on the side. Ferdinand Levillain was a French sculptor who made his debut in 1861 at the French Artists Salon. He became famous in the 1870s thanks to his association with Ferdinand Barbedienne who began to exhibit Neo-Greek style lamps, cups, vases and candelabras on his stands. Ferdinand Barbedienne was a prominent French metalworker. Mopsus and Menalcas are the characters of Virgil's Eclogue 5, a pastoral poem which tells the story of two herdsmen who meet and engage in a friendly contest, one singing about the death and the other about the deification of Daphnis.
